Holiday Gift Guide for your Dog!
Tuesday December 04, 2012 09:10am
Thousands of people buy gifts for their dogs on Christmas! I am no different, I even wrap mine. Watching the dogs un-wrap the gifts is pretty fun in my house. When shopping for my dog's Christmas gift I like to buy things that will last at least a while. I also like to shop for deals.
Every year I do a holiday gift guide for your dog. This is year is a little bit different...I have three categories of gifts; gifts for your pet dog, gifts for your hunting dog, and gifts for your dog loving friend or family member. The gifts are all prices from homemade to $50.00 and up. Continue reading for all my suggestions.
Gift Ideas For Your Pet Dog:
1. An Interactive Toy- To be honest I don't know which one of these toys is best but I will definitely be getting on for my Belgian Malinois rescue Sahara because (no offense to the Labrador Retrievers) she really needs to use her brain when playing! ActiveDogToys.com offers every many interactive dog toys.
2. Bouncing Burrow Buddies- This year my Labrador Retrievers are getting Bouncing Burrow Buddies. I am trying these this Christmas for my dogs for three reasons; 1. A friend of mine told me these where holding up well with her Labrador family. 2. I know my dogs will like the ball part. 3. If my dogs do destroy them at least there won't be any stuffing to clean up.
3. Homemade Treats- My Labrador Retriever's favorite holiday gift is always the food!!! This year I will be trying a new recipe, Christmas Carob Mint Dog Cookies from PawLux.com. I chose these cookies because I had most the ingredients, they looked pretty easy, and I always wanted to make cookies with icing (like in the pet stores). See recipe as follows:
Christmas Carob Mint Dog Cookies
1 cup flour
1 cup baking mix (Ex. Bisquick)
5 drops mint flavoring
1/4 cup milk
2 TBLS margarine
1 egg
1 teaspoon corn syrup
Pre Heat oven to 350 degrees
Mix all ingredients and roll out onto a floured surface to approximately 1/4 inch thick. Cut with bone shaped cookie cutters and position on a greased cookie sheet.
Bake for 25-30 minutes
Cool cookies then dip them half way in melted carob. (DO NOT USE CHOCOLATE)
Gift Ideas For Your Hunting Dog:
1. S.U.G.A.R. Coat- As Gussi, my 10 year old black Labrador retriever gets older, we pick and choose the days we waterfowl hunt her. So in an effort to extend her hunting seasons we are getting her a S.U.G.A.R. Coat this year for Christmas. I will be honest I haven't used one of these before but the video looks GREAT. I also know that most the time in the Pacific Northwest it doesn't usually get that cold but anything for my dog Gussi!
2. First Aid kit- Whether you have a hunting dog or just a dog that plays ruff in the backyard (I have both!) this would be a excellent gift. Recently we ordered one from Cabelas' and we a very happy with it. You can also make your own with a little help from one of my previous blogs.
3. New Neoprene Dog Vest- Like families who hand down clothes form the older daughter to the younger daughter, Hemi (my chocolate Labrador retriever) has been wearing a hand me down Neoprene vest. She could use a new one! The one she is wearing now it pretty worn out and doesn't fit her well. This Christmas Hemi will be getting a new vest. You can order a vest online from Cabelas' but even better would be buying one from somewhere you can take your dog to try it on, to make sure it fits well.
For the Dog Lover:
1. An Ornament- Every year for Christmas my boyfriend's mom gets me a Dog Christmas ornament from Hallmark. It is a gift I look forward to every year and always love. You don't have to get the ornament from Hallmark but I think any dog lover would appreciate this as a gift.
2. A Gift Certificate- Most dog training places including Rogue Retrievers would gladly make you a gift certificate for a class or private lessons for your dog loving friend. Maybe your friend needs a little extra help with their young retriever this hunting season. Or maybe you have a friend that always wanted to take an agility class but just didn't have the extra money. I am sure a gift of dog training would be greatly appreciated by your friend and their dog!
3. A Magazine Subscription- Personally I think magazine subscriptions are great gifts! There are so many options when it comes to magazines. My two favorites are Retriever Journal and Clean Run. Every year for my birthday I get a subscription to Retriever Journal and this year (for an early Christmas present to myself) I got myself a subscription to Clean Run to help me with my dog Agility training.
I hope that you found my dog holiday gift guide helpful and that you have a Happy and Safe Holiday Season!
Merry Christmas from Rogue Retrievers!

My Little Brown dog, "Hemi"
The last 30 days have been hard for Hemi and I. I went from entering Hemi in Summer Hunt Tests and getting her ready for her first Agility trial. To sleeping on the floor with her as she quivered in pain. To her feeling better and exercising. To once again taking her to the veterinarian but this time a specialist.
