Thanksgiving with your "Family"
Monday November 19, 2012 11:54am
If you knew me you would know holidays are not my favorite time of the year. But, out of all the holidays, Thanksgiving is my favorite! I love the yummy food and not having to worry about the gift giving. My dogs also love Thanksgiving, sometimes too much (my in-laws like to give them too much turkey). This year we are staying home for Thanksgiving so it will be a small event and my dogs will not be aloud to have too many treats. That being said, my dogs and the ones staying in the kennel will have a Happy Thanksgiving! I will follow my own guidelines for a Happy Thanksgiving for the my whole "family" and I encourage you to do the same.
1. Feel free to feed your face but not the your dogs.
Most of us will over indulge on Thanksgiving but make sure your dogs don't! Having a few small pieces of turkey or green beans mixed into their dinner is just fine but don't over do it! Your dog can become very sick by eating many of the things that are in a normal Thanksgiving meal. For example, sage, onions, chocolate, turkey skin, and many more. For a more detailed list click here.
2. Have special treats just for the dog so you don't have to feel bad not giving them anything...Kongs are your friend!
If you are like me you will want to give your dog a special treat on Thanksgiving. I suggest making your dogs something just for them. A Kong stuffed with dog treats and/or dog food is GREAT idea! I like to soak my dog's food in water then pack it into the Kong and freeze it. On Thanksgiving, I might give them something a little extra in their Kong. For example, some peanut butter or a small bite or two of turkey. If you are in the baking mood read my pervious Christmas blogs or visit Honest Kitchen on Facebook for recipes just for your dog!
3. Exercise your dog!
Before things get to busy at your house with all the company take your dog for a long walk! Or maybe if you have dog friendly company, they could take your dog for a walk or play with them in the back yard. Any exercise it better then none.
4. No bones!
There is not much I can say about this one...DO NOT give your dog any cooked turkey bones.

My Little Brown dog, "Hemi"
The last 30 days have been hard for Hemi and I. I went from entering Hemi in Summer Hunt Tests and getting her ready for her first Agility trial. To sleeping on the floor with her as she quivered in pain. To her feeling better and exercising. To once again taking her to the veterinarian but this time a specialist.
