Lost Dog

Missing dog pictureWhen I am at the Post Office or the Veterinarian I always look at the lost dog flyers.  Since I drive around a lot, I hope that maybe I will find the dog.  The other day when I looked at the flyer it was a dog I knew, Keta.  She was a VERY sweet, obedient, black Labrador...the kind you would never thing would run away from home!  It was very sad seeing her picture on the flyer I can't even imagine how her owners felt!  Then just last week I look one of my dogs (Luci) to the vet.  They had to scan her for her microchip and the vet struggled to find it!  I doubt they would have even looked that hard if I hadn't told them she had one.  The chip has migrated down her left shoulder.

Different colored dog collarsI will admit my dogs do not all have collars and tags unless they are going somewhere with out me.  I used to believe that their microchips would sve them if they got lost.  I have had dogs I owned in the past be found and scanned and my name came up and I helped them get back to their owners.  But, I don't think any sheltesr would have looked for Luci's microchip as long as the other vet did (knowing she had one), they would have just assumed she didn't have one!

Vet tech and dogSo after seeing Keta on the flyer and knowing that Luci's microchip is way down her shoulder I am on a mission to make sure everyone (including myself) checks their dogs to see where their microchip is and has proper and current tags one them!  If you don't already have a microchip because they are too expensive or as my brother asked me the other "Why does my dog need a microchip she's not a "show dog like yours"(FYI mine Dog being microchip scanedaren't show dogs either) I suggest getting one ASAP!  Your vet can easily give your dog a microchip.  There are often microchip clinics at dog shows where you can have it done at a cheaper price.  Also your local animal shelter will usually microchip your dog at a discounted rate.  I know for a fact that Columbia County Animal Control  does (that's where I sent my brother). If your dog already has a microchip I would suggest that the next time you take them to the vet and pay for that expensive office call get your moneys worth.   Have your vet do a little extra and ask them to scan your dog for their microchip.  If your dog's microchip has migrated like Luci's talk to your vet about possibly re-micro chipping them?

Make sure your dog has a collar with tags on it and that the phone number on your tags is current.  Double check that your dog's tags have your cell phone number on them incase you are out of town and your pet goes missing.  In an effort to "practice what I preach" I recently ordered tags from Boomerang Pet Tags...so far I REALLY like them.  I have my dog Hemi testing them out.  If the tags can stay on her collar they will stay on any dog's collar!  I hope that with these precautions you and I NEVER have to hang a lost dog flyer!!!

The last 30 days have been hard for Hemi and I. I went from entering Hemi in Summer Hunt Tests and getting her ready for her first Agility trial. To sleeping on the floor with her as she quivered in pain. To her feeling better and exercising. To once again taking her to the veterinarian but this time a specialist.
