Fourth of July and your Dog!

Saturday June 30, 2012 07:22pm

Last year on the 4th of July I was whelping a litter of four male chocolate Labrador puppies!  We named them the second they came out, there was Uncle Sam, Little Lincoln, George, and Bruce (Springsteen, "Born on the 4th of July").  This year I have another littler of Chocolate Labrador Puppies for sale but they will be three weeks old on the 4th of July so I am having a BBQ!!!  While planning my BBQ I think about my dogs and what I will do with them?  My boyfriend's family is always feeding them things they shouldn't have and leaving doors and gates open.

Unfortunately, the 5th of July is the busiest day of the year for animal shelters.  Many dogs get scared because of the of the craziness of the 4th of July.  Dogs are scared by the partying and the noise and lights of the fireworks. Their fear may cause them to run away from home.  If you are lucky they end up in a shelter and you can find them the next day, but some are not lucky.  I have been lucky with my dogs since they are used to gun fire they have no fear of fireworks, but that can be a problem too so I follow the following guidelines with my dogs every 4th of July (and pretty much anytime my boyfriend's family comes over to visit);

1.  Your dog should not be given most BBQ food for example, chicken bones and booze.  Also it is very easy for party goers to unknowingly leave a gate or door open letting your dog out.  So I suggest just keeping your dogs away form the party all together.  Take them for a long walk before your guests arrive and/or the fireworks start.  Set them up in a bedroom with a nice spot to lay, their favorite chewy and a bowl of water.  I also like to keep the radio turned up so they can't hear the fireworks and get scared or bark.

2.  Be prepared for the worst.  Make sure your dog has a collar on with I.D. tags and a micro-chip.  Also, have a current picture of them in case they run away from home.

3.  If your dog is overly upset by loud noises talk to your vet prior to the 4th of July.  There are medications that can be given to calm your dogs and as well as calming aids like the Thunder Shirt which can be very helpful for stressed dogs.

Rogue Retriever's hopes you and your dog(s) have a happy and safe 4th of July!

My Little Brown dog, "Hemi"

The last 30 days have been hard for Hemi and I. I went from entering Hemi in Summer Hunt Tests and getting her ready for her first Agility trial. To sleeping on the floor with her as she quivered in pain. To her feeling better and exercising. To once again taking her to the veterinarian but this time a specialist.
