Help the Hunt Test Sport...

Volunteer

You've ran a few hunt tests...Maybe your dog has their Junior Hunt Test Title and you are training them to run Seniors. After running those Junior Hunt Tests and entering your first Senior Hunt Test did you ever stop to think what it takes to put on a Hunt Test??? Well I'll tell you...it takes a great group of people who love the “sport” and many many man hours!!! Months ahead of time you have to find your trial grounds, pick judges, and file with Entry Express.  You might even have to plan a BBQ and Raffle to raise funds for next years event. Then you need to come up with people to volunteer to Marshall, and gun and whatever else is needed that you yourself can not do alone. Oh and did I mention that whether you are judging, finding judges, or a gunner NONE of these positions are being paid. The only people that get paid are the worker kids. This process of planing a Hunt Test takes hours and hours of time not to mention the time to actually put on the trial!!!

There are 2 reasons that I am telling you this...

The first is EVERY club/trial NEEDS volunteers! If you love this sport and want to see it continue for years and years get out there and volunteer!!! If you don't know what or how to do something just ask. Or volunteer to help someone else with a job.  For example be a co-marshall so you can learn and then do it on your own next time. I will admit being a Marshall can be a lot of work but you also get to see the dogs work up close and you can learn from the judges.  You also get a free lunch and our club (OHRC) has a GREAT workers party!

The second reason, (and I can't believe I have to say this) but be NICE to the other volunteers! If your Marshall tells you one minute to get in line and the next minute to wait don't get mad. Just realize that they have a lot to do and to juggle being a Marshall.  Who knows it might even be their first time.  Instead of getting upset, offer to help! And the next time that your gunners miss your bird and you are frustrated again don't get upset they are only volunteers trying their best!

Training Tip

Train with a Group

There are many things you can do to train your retrieve on your own if you need examples read my previous blog, “So you train your Retriever on your own" But you still need to train with a group. Your dog needs to be acclimated to working around other dogs, people, and places. Here are a couple suggestions for getting your dog in a group setting. 1) Make you own group. Get a few of your training partners together at least once a week. 2) Go to a picnic trial or training day! Information on up-coming events visit my calendar or check out these club's websites Oregon Hunting Retriever Club and/or Lower Columbia River HRC. 3) Come train with me on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday afternoons!  For more information give me a call 503 522 9896 or email me at adrienne@rogueretrievers.com.

My Little Brown dog, "Hemi"

The last 30 days have been hard for Hemi and I. I went from entering Hemi in Summer Hunt Tests and getting her ready for her first Agility trial. To sleeping on the floor with her as she quivered in pain. To her feeling better and exercising. To once again taking her to the veterinarian but this time a specialist.
